Serena Williams opens up on choosing black doll as her book’s main character
In an interview with the Black Girls Texting podcast, Serena Williams explained why the main character of her new children’s book, a doll, is black. “Qai Qai had her own personality. She became a TikTok star and an Instagram star.
That (black voice) was her voice on TikTok and Instagram. So, it kind of came through with how she started posting stuff and etc. We wanted to keep that because she has a huge following. She’s obviously super positive but she needed to be quick and witty.
(We asked) how do we incorporate that quick and witty into a book? She makes jokes, she makes people laugh, so we can do that in the voice, on how she replies, and stuff like that.”
On Instagram, the Qai Qai doll has a following of about 340.000 users after posting over 535 times.
On TikTok, Qai Qai has a whopping amount of 4 million followers.

Serena Williams’ recently launched children’s book is called The Adventures of Qai Qai.
